Carotinodermia

Manifests as orange-yellow discoloration of the skin (xanthodermia)
Most prominent on the palms and soles due to the thickness of their stratum corneum as well as in seborrheic areas (nasolabial folds) due to sebaceous excretion of pigments
Mucous membranes and sclera not affected

Etiology
  • Excessive consumption of foods rich in carotenoids (carrots, oranges, dairy products if the cattle have consumed it)
  • Lycopenes (isomer of carotene found in tomatoes)
  • Carotenod therapies
  • Hyperlipidemia (serum lipids can bind carotenes)
  • Defect in the conversion of carotenoids to vitamin A (liver disease, diabetes, thyroid)
  • Renal failure due to failure to eliminate carotenoids
