Dystrophic Calcinosis

Calcium deposition in abnormal tissues
 
Etiology
  • Secondary to injury and necrosis
 
Clinical presentation
  • Tends to be localized
  • Associated with a specific disease or mechanism:
    • Autoimmune (ex. limited systemic sclerosis and childhood dermatomyositis)
    • Panniculitis
    • Genetic
    • Infection
    • Neoplasm
    • Neonatal heel sticks
 
Calcification in Genetic Disorders
Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
    • Subcutaneous nodules called “spherules” - calcification of herniated fat lobules
  • Porphyria cutanea tarda
 
Most commonly calcifying skin tumors
  • Pilomatricomas - up to 75%
  • Pilar cysts
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Chondroid syringoma
 
Inflammatory conditions
  • Liquefactive necrosis of chronic abscesses
  • Fat necrosis
  • Congenital CMV
  • CREST syndrome
 
Exames complementares de diagnóstico
  • Patients are usually normocalcemic
