Pseudocyst of the auricle

Etiology
  • Hyaline degeneration of the cartilage (endochondral pseudocyst) → leading to its liquefaction, without a cystic wall (similar to mucoid pseudocysts of the fingers)

Treatment
  • Puncture the pseudocyst (sterile, clear yellow oily fluid)
    • → Compressive dressing using two compresses, one anterior and one retroauricular, held in place by two transfixing the pinna
  • Simple incision and drainage
  • Definitive solution
    • Making a simple incision in the retroauricular skin, excising a disc of cartilage from the posterior wall of the cyst, and resuturing the incision under a compression dressing
